New England Patriots Franchise History

The New England Patriots, synonymous with excellence and controversy in equal measure, boast a history far richer than just Tom Brady and Deflategate. Let's embark on a journey through their 60+ years, exploring triumphs, trials, and the enduring spirit that made them a footballing force.

Early Struggles and the Belichick Era Dawns (1960-2000):

Born in 1960 as the Boston Patriots, their early years were marked by inconsistency. After the AFL merged with the NFL, things did not improve greatly for the team, but they did have some great players in Andre Tippet, John Hannah, Steve Grogan, among others.

However, Bill Belichick's arrival in 2000 marked a turning point. His meticulous coaching style, coupled with the drafting of a young quarterback named Tom Brady, laid the foundation for an unprecedented era of dominance.

The Brady-Belichick Dynasty (2001-2019):

This period needs little introduction. Six Super Bowl victories, nine AFC championships, and countless individual accolades cemented their place as a dynasty. They redefined offensive strategies, with Brady's pinpoint accuracy and Belichick's defensive genius creating an unstoppable force. But amidst the wins, accusations of rule-breaking cast a shadow, culminating in the infamous "Deflategate" scandal.

Post-Brady and Looking Ahead (2020-Present):

Brady's departure signaled a new chapter. Mac Jones, the new quarterback, carries the torch with promise, but navigating the post-Brady landscape remains a challenge. The 2023 season ended without a playoff appearance, highlighting the need for adjustments and the difficulty of replicating past success.

Jim Marshall runs wrong way with recovered fumble

On October 25, 1964, after recovering a fumble against the 49ers in San Francisco, Minnesota Vikings star defensive end Jim Marshall runs 66 yards the wrong way into his own end zone. The four-year veteran believes he has scored a touchdown, so he throws the ball out of bounds in celebration, resulting in a safety […] — www.history.com

Sure, here is a summary of the infamous "wrong way run" play by Jim Marshall of the Minnesota Vikings:

On October 25, 1964, during a game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Minnesota Vikings were leading 27-17 in the fourth quarter. With just over two minutes remaining, 49ers quarterback John Brodie fumbled the ball after being sacked by Vikings defensive end Carl Eller.

Vikings linebacker Dave Whitsell recovered the fumble at the San Francisco 49ers' 20-yard line. However, teammate Jim Marshall, a defensive end, mistakenly picked up the loose ball and started running the wrong way. He ran 66 yards down the field, unaware that he was heading into his own end zone.

The confusion on the field was palpable. Some Vikings players yelled at Marshall to stop, but he thought they were encouraging him to run for a touchdown. San Francisco 49ers players were initially unsure of what was happening but then realized the opportunity and tackled Marshall in his own end zone, resulting in a safety for the 49ers.

The safety cut the Vikings' lead to 27-19, but they ultimately won the game 27-22. Despite the win, Marshall's blunder became one of the most famous and embarrassing plays in NFL history. He was initially ridiculed for his mistake, but later gained respect for his sportsmanship and humility.

1984 NFL Draft - Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame tells of the 1984 NFL Draft and the Number 1 pick by the New England Patriots, Irving Fryar.

May 1, 1984 - Nebraska wide receiver Irving Fryar was the first pick by the New England Patriots in the 1984 NFL Draft. In my research I cannot find where one member of this draft class has been enshrined as of yet in Canton, Ohio. It is interesting that another Cornhusker offensive player was selected at the number 2 spot in Dean Steinkuhler to the Houston Oilers. The Pro Football Reference gives us a glimpse of the first ten selections:

Pick Tm Player Pos College/Univ

1 NWE Irving Fryar WR Nebraska College Stats
2 HOU Dean Steinkuhler T Nebraska College Stats
3 NYG Carl Banks LB Michigan St.
4 PHI Kenny Jackson WR Penn St. College Stats
